The renovation of this apartment, typical of the Eixample district of Barcelona and built in the early 20th century, required a total redistribution of the rooms and was initiated without any major premises from the client. However, it was important to have a bathroom en suite with all the details for relaxation with a shower and a freestanding bathtub (mainly intended for the wife of the couple); and another different bathroom for him with a more industrial style.
Another condition was to create a study for working from home while also ensuring it was a pleasant space with plenty of personality for leisure activities such as listening to music and reading.
It was also essential to recover, as much as possible, the original elements of the house, such as the restored ceilings with metal beams and Catalan vaults, which give great originality to the rooms intended.
And perhaps not essential, but a challenge, was to visually hide the televisions as much as possible. In the case of the living room, this has been achieved with its aesthetic frame (Samsung The Frame), and in the master bedroom suite, it has been hidden in a custom-made piece of furniture with a lift-up hardware system.
It has been a comprehensive project of renovation, furniture, and decoration with a very different decorative style and finishes. Initially, the owners were looking for an eclectic type of decoration, with industrial and bohemian touches, and thanks to total collaboration with the clients, we managed to shape all their ideas. They were always open to advice to organize all the concepts, and they made it very easy for us to choose materials, colors, furniture, etc.
The most prevalent decorative style in the project is industrial, characterized by open and spacious spaces with a casual style and large contrasts, modern and aggressive at the same time. The use of materials such as original exposed brick , which we have recovered on many walls; concrete, a material that we have imitated with large format Mirage ceramics for almost all the flooring; iron, visible in many elements, but its presence stands out in the structure (with exposed beams and pillars) installed in the opening of the load-bearing wall to open the kitchen to the living room; and wooda prominent element in furniture, but above all, very important in the work of recovering the original wood plank present in the flooring of the master bedroom and the study.
The new aluminum enclosures are from the K-Line brand and blend perfectly with the style thanks to their textured matte black finish. The rest of the windows are original and recovered. The glass has been replaced, stripped, and varnished matte, and the hardware has been spray-painted to achieve the desired effect.
The combination of these main elements is what places this project in this primarily industrial decorative style, although we believe there are also some touches of other styles, such as the bohemian style, for example in the hammock corner and guest bedroom, where a wide range of colors and patterns are used with some ethnic or tribal elements.
Even the Wabi-Sabi style has a place in this description since it is characterized by being a mix of vintage with rustic and bohemian, and where the old is used to create something new. The center table in the study is originally a board from a Burmese game, to which we have added an iron hairpin structure (just like the one on the study table). The console in the master bedroom has been made by joining two original radiators from the house with a glass top, lacquering them in red, and achieving that unique and personal corner.
The doors also play a significant role in this renovation, breaking away from the usual, they have been lacquered in anthracite gray and come in various types. There are sliding doors with hidden structures, sliding doors with visible industrial structures, pivot doors… But the most remarkable are the sliding doors leading to the hallway covered with a photographic design in vinyl, thus departing from the usual monotony of these pass-through spaces.
Even the entrance hall is endowed with great personality, with a large storage closet, covered in Vescom vinyl imitating golden leather, which combines very well with the clients’ chest of drawers and mirror, and with the decorative pieces that the room houses.
The furniture for this project has been custom-made by professionals from each sector, and this is how we have achieved that originality and difference.
The fireplace is gas (Chimeneas Campos), and the decision was to give it all the prominence possible, hence the choice of the 20×20 cm ceramic from Aparici Cerámica that covers it vertically. The “TV unit” goes unnoticed due to its minimalist design and its black iron sheet custom-made; and the Vescom vinyl covering behind the television in the same color makes the Samsung The Frame television stand out more, a way to have beautiful works of art and photographs.
The cabinetmaker’s work can be seen in the large table and bench in the living room and kitchen island, made with solid wood planks 7 cm thick and iron structures. La The LED lighting in the living room is indirect and is hidden in the decorative cornices from ORAC, illuminating the spectacular ceiling. And the black spotlight rail is from the manufacturer FARO. The rest of the mustard-colored luminaires are from Ferroluce (Lumens Barcelona).
The velvet sofa and chaise longue in the living room with studs are from Gems Barcelona, who have created these unique and spectacular pieces for us.
For auxiliary furniture such as chairs, stools, side tables, study furniture, balcony furniture, etc., we have opted for brands such as Kave Home and Sklum.
All the curtains in very neutral shades and simple lines are made by Serveis Tèxtils, as is the screen system installed in the hammock area.
In the suite-type bedroom, all the furniture is manufactured by Tegar Mobel, the bathroom and dressing room furniture imitating a dark wood tone; and the wardrobe and bed in the bedroom with a finish simulating vintage aged wood, seeking that different touch that the room required. From the same manufacturer is the furniture in the laundry room, in mint green finish, which gives a feeling of cleanliness and calm along with the traditional white marble and the destoned ceramics on the Aparici wall.
In the kitchen, high-end appliances have been installed, with brands such as Siemens and Neff. The kitchen furniture in dark blue is from Auró Cuines, and the natural granite stone work surface in a silky finish from Granith, following the grain in all the pieces where possible. The textured matte black hood is from Pando, and the faucet and ceramic sink evoking the old are from Franke.
It is important to highlight the ceramics in this house for their design and originality. All the flooring with the 120×120 cm format from Mirage, and in the bathrooms, it continues on the walls but in 60×60 cm format, thus unifying and giving more emphasis to the decorative ceramics. In the case of the bathroom intended for her, the piece imitating weathered turquoise wood is from Unica Ceramiche; and in the relaxation bathroom for him, a colorful mural has been created with pieces from 41zero42. The bathtub and matching washbasin are from Hidrobox. It must be said that achieving to lift and place that spectacular bathtub in the house was one of the great challenges. In his bathroom, both the sink and the industrial-looking cabinet are from the Tikamoon. And the Japanese-style toilet from Grohe.
And the AirZone zoned air conditioning system has been chosen for the well-being of its owners.
